Day 295: Let Someone Go Ahead Of Me At The Grocery Store

Maybe I am weird, but I really enjoy going grocery shopping.  Especially when I get to take Isla with me and she sits in the cart pointing things out like she knows what is on the list.  She has always been really good when we go to the store, and hasn't had a public meltdown yet (you can't see me but I am currently knocking on wood).  My wife needed some time this afternoon to herself in order to get progress reports for her students done, so Isla and I hopped in the car and headed over to our local Trader Joe's.  Our Trader Joe's is typically extremely busy being that it is in the middle of Chicago, but today, it was crazier than ever.  I'm not sure if a new version of Y2K is happening or if there is an impending shortage on Trader Joe's Orange Chicken, but we were packed in there like sardines.  After navigating the grocery store version of a mosh pit for about 30 minutes, I had finally gotten everything that I needed.  I got in the shortest, non-15 items or less line that I could find and started to play with Isla.  A few seconds after I had gotten in line, I noticed that the young woman behind me only had a bag of chips and salsa in her hand, while I was sitting there with a completely full cart.  So today, for my random act of kindness, I let the woman with only a few items go ahead of me at the grocery store.  I'm not trying to pat my own back, but I wish that everyone would do this more often.  In most cases, you are only losing out on about a minute and you are showing another person genuine kindness.

  1. This is something I do all of the time. I only shop twice a month and my cart is ALWAYS loaded. It is a very simple thing to do and people are always so grateful.

  3. I couldn't agree more! It's that little bit of thoughtfulness towards others that makes the world a more pleasant place. Me and my husband always have a full trolley and we have been known to let up to 2 or 3 people with only a couple of items in. The fact that they often just can't believe you're letting them go first and the profuse thanks we get speaks volumes- they are not used to it: how sad.
