Day 81: Demanded Justice For Trayvon

I am sure by now you have heard the story of Trayvon Martin. For those who haven't, Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old boy who was murdered (and yes I will use the word murdered) in Sanford, Florida for being in the wrong place at the wrong time in front of the wrong person. I guess it is wrong of me to say the wrong place at the wrong time because he was simply walking to a convenience store nearby his father and step-mothers house. He had every right to be there. It isn't wrong of me to say that he was in front of the wrong person however. George Zimmerman, the self appointed head of the neighborhood watch, saw Trayvon, armed with nothing more than Skittles, iced tea and a thin 140 lb frame, and due to his own racism and stereotyping deemed him to be a threat. George, who isn't a police officer and was also told by 911 to stand down, took it upon himself to eliminate that "threat." Based on the evidence piling up, it seems that George decided he would get the jump on Trayvon, attacked him, and then shot him to death when Trayvon was simply trying to get away. To me, this seems like an open and shut case. However, for some reason, the "leadership" and police department of Sanford don't see it that way. They don't see the need to charge George Zimmerman with even the slightest of crimes. So for today's random act of kindness I am signing a petition that will demand justice for Trayvon Martin and hopefully save future innocent people from the shoot first, ask questions later process. Sorry to come off as somewhat aggressive with this post, but I simply cannot understand how this is happening. I just can't fathom that I live in a world where an innocent person can be murdered and there are no repercussions for the person who pulled the trigger when there is so much evidence stacked against them.

  1. I was hoping you would do a post about this tragedy. I'm hoping that the FBI will step in, if necessary, and give Trayvon's family the closure they need by locking up Mr. Zimmerman for the rest of his life.

  6. I am so glad that at last the Department of Justice are now investigating this awful crime.

Hopefully now, justice will be done, if indeed a little late.

  7. I totally support the arrest and indictment of Zimmerman, however your petition is through Moveon.org and I won't give my name and email to that organization. Is there another way to show support for this poor family who lost their son?

  8. The petition is also on Change.org. I signed it last week after I signed the petition for the movie "Bully" to be rated pg! I also posted on my blog sharingthanks.blogspot.com the information on how to sign Katy's petition to help convince the MPRA to change the rating to PG-13 instead of R so more kids can see this important movie. I enjoy reading your blog Ryan and the kind acts you commit to everyday.

  9. Thank you for continuing to honor Trayvons life by using your ever-growing access to the public! I have been following this story and reflecting on the sheer example this is of not just Trayvon's life, but others who are treated with injustice on a daily basis, some to the point that they lose their lives!
As far as the aggression that is noted in your post, it's completely appropriate. Kudos.

  10. I was so sick when I heard about this. I am a former law enforcement officer and a concealed weapon permit holder and I specifically remember them saying in my class that we were to only use our weapons as a LAST resort and in the event that our life our our family's was in danger.

You can't tell me that this man carrying a weapon felt threatened by a boy walking along the street. I am heartbroken for Trayvon's family and what they now must go through.

I signed that petition and I sincerely hope they do prosecute him for murder. Racism makes me sick and you know that if the tables were turned and it was an African American who did the shooting that he would be in jail and convicted by now.

Thoughts and prayers are with Trayvon's family.

  14. I still cannot believe something like this happened, and Zimmerman so far has been protected on what I think is one of the stupidest laws that Florida has ever put through. This is a wonderful blog post, and my condolences go out to all of Trayvon's friends and family.
