Day 234: Collected Box Tops for Education

I love cereal.  If not for potential weight gain and the judging eyes of my wife, I could probably eat a box of cereal everyday.  It really doesn't matter what type of cereal it is either, although I prefer ones typically geared towards kids such as Cocoa Pebbles, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms and Count Chocula (though this is becoming so hard to find).  Needless to say, in any given month, I go through a decent amount of boxes of cereal.  I have always just thrown out or recycled the boxes, not thinking anything more about them.  However, my wife reminded me of something that I did for the first time when I was in 8th grade, so I figured I would do it for one of my random acts.  Box Tops For Education is a great program which allows schools to collect the tops or labels from many different products, which then turn into funds that the school can use for a variety of supplies and programs.  So today and for the next 30 days, for my random act of kindness, I am going to be collecting the box tops for all of the cereal that I eat.  Any other products that offer the same rewards, I will be sure to include.  I am going to send the funds to Erie Elementary here in Chicago because I know the teachers pretty well and "THEY'RE GRRRRRREAT!!!" (Apologies for the terrible cereal joke).

  1. I am SO glad to hear about your Box Top collecting! My mom was the volunteer in charge of organizing and sending in Box Tops every month while I was in elementary school. (Of course, I was enlisted to help!) Even though the schools in our area no longer have coordinators for the program, we religiously save the Box Tops off of every package we can. It's such an easy way to help, and once you're in the habit you'll save them without even thinking. Keep an eye on Juicy Juice bottles, and Kleenex brand tissues!!

I also wanted to share that I was inspired and motivated to make a donation to Wildfire Tees after seeing your post, and I just got my shirt in the mail this week! As a recent college grad with thousands in loans (and still seeking employment), its hard to give, but this cause is helping people in our great country, and I couldn't pass up an opportunity to be a part of that effort.

You are such an inspiration, and I hope to be like you one day. Thank you for sharing this blog, this random act with me, and giving me a reason to smile.

  3. My family and I have been doing this for a long time. They are adding them to more and more products now, so we always check before we throw things away.
