Mark Moll is tired of hearing stories about dogs dying because their owners left them in a hot car. It happens all too often (over 1000 reported animal deaths this past year) and he wants to do something to raise awareness of this issue. On the first day of summer, Mark started "73 Days of Summer, 73 Safe Parking Spots" here in Chicago. What Mark does is depicted in the above picture, but he creates a "safe" parking spot for people to view, and if they choose to park there, they are hopefully making the promise that they refuse to leave an animal in the vehicle. So today, for my random act of kindness, I joined Mark in creating a safe parking spot near my house. It only took a few minutes to do, which is around the same time it takes for an animal to succumb to the heat should they be left inside a hot vehicle.
Just a few tips for traveling with your animal companions:
- Even on "cool" 60 degree days, animals should not be left in a car even with the windows cracked because the temperature can rise greatly.
- Be sure to keep a water source nearby the animal should you need to travel with them.
- Call the police should you witness an animal stuck inside a car. It will probably save their life.
