Day 71: Vowed to Get in Shape for My Wife and Daughter
One of the reasons that I chose to do 366 Random Acts of Kindness was because I didn't want to do a traditional New Year's resolution like eat better or get in shape. I have made those resolutions before and quit them. It was a combination of laziness and a lack of accountability if I were to give them up. When I made my resolution to do the 366 Random Acts for my daughter, I knew that by doing so, I had to be committed to accomplishing each act. There was no way that I was going to "let down" my daughter so early in her life and set a terrible example.
The recent passing of my father-in-law really shook me. I saw how saddened my wife and mother-in-law were with his passing, and I really got upset thinking about if I suddenly were taken from Lindsey and Isla. I know that cancer is something that can affect even the healthiest of people, but I also know the lifestyle I am living isn't super healthy and in line with staying cancer free. I eat way too many processed, fatty and fast foods, I seem to always be going up for seconds, and I rarely (if ever) work out. Overall, I have just become a lazy blob. I feel horrible because I have been blaming a lack of exercise on my daughter coming into our lives. That all stops now. Today and moving forward, my random act of kindness is to get healthy for my wife and daughter. Since it is one of my random acts, it isn't something that I am allowed to fail at. Today, I am going to book a physical with a doctor on ZocDoc (shameless plug). In the next 90 days, I pledge to lose 22 pounds through eating right and exercising. I will then maintain that healthy lifestyle for them because there are a lot of things that we need to do as a family, and I refuse to miss them.

I've been through a large weight loss, a little more than 100 pounds. I see so many other people struggle through sticking with it, but you hit the nail on the head - the key to making a huge change in your wellness is accountability.
ReplyDeleteStick with it and let your readers know how you do! You're first accountable to your family but now you're also accountable to the web. ;)
Great photoshop skills!
ReplyDeletehey mate one the keys to undertaking this obviously is motivation and you have a great tool to motivate you. The other thing is consistency, don't do too much to soon, a little at a time and like a turtle keep going. Good luck with it! Keen to hear how you go as well, so there is another motivating factor your loyal readership.
ReplyDeletephotoshop? lol, idk it was SOOOOOOOOO perfect i couldnt tell... >.> lol:)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was 48, my Babygirl was 6, and I was 100 lbs overweight. Since my mom had her first stroke at 58, I suddenly awoke to the idea that I had only TEN years to make a lasting change.
ReplyDeleteI did not 'go on a diet.' I radically changed my lifestyle. I've lost 60 lbs, and went from being winded going up 2 flights of stairs to being able to ski for 6 hours with Babygirl (not that we go to do that THIS year!). It's a work in progress, but I refuse to go back.

This a great idea for a blog! I love that being around for your daughter and wife is what's motivating you. Good luck! I'm going to follow along.
ReplyDeleteReally love this blog entry. You have not only found the best motivation in your daughter and wife but you've shown what a great Dad and husband you are too. So sorry for your families loss, my 33 year old sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and it certainly does makes you rethink your life. wish you all the luck in the world! xxx
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new commitment to becoming and staying healthy. This is an act of kindness that I'm positive your wife and daughter will always appreciate and never forget.
ReplyDeleteThis is so inspirational! I love what you're doing. If only everyone could do at least one act of kindness each day, the world would be a happier place.
ReplyDeletei know. i totally agree.
DeleteOne of the best things my family did for our health was to cut out fast food and soda. We haven't had a single trip through a drive thru, a sip of soda, or ANY fast food in over three years now and we feel GREAT! (And we've been saving SO much money!) :) My newest vice to kick is going to be chips and any other junk snacks. Baby steps is all it takes to change your life. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't have the same story, but I realized that my body rules my existance in this world. Without it I wouldn't be here. So I decided I want to take care of it. I haven't cut out all the junk foods, or fast foods, etc. But I cut them. It's to the point where I don't really care to have them, but every now and then I'll just buy. A good exercise book is "You are Your Own Gym" by Mark Lauren. You can amazon the reveiws, etc. if interested. Keep up the awesome story.
ReplyDeletevery nice!
